Ethnocentrism Assignment – Exercise #7 EXTRA    ++
1.     Read about Ethnocentrism on Edmodo (Week #6)
Ethnocentrism is the belief of superiority is one's personal ethnic group, but it can also develop from racial or religious differences.
2.    List three examples of ethnocentrism from history
1   Roman Empire
     Adolf Hitler
     Empire of Japan
3.    What country is known for being ethnocentric today?
    China
4.    What is the famous quote from Shylock which reminds all of us of our humanity?

I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.
5.    Look at the two maps of ethnocentric Americans and ethnocentric Indians.

6.    Now make your own map showing how Emiratis see the world:

Watch Class Divided
ü Understanding
With partners, answer the following:
1.      Where, when and with whom did this experiment take place?
It took place on a Tuesday morning, somewhere in the 1960s, with USA children.
2.       Describe the experiment.

The objective of the experiment was to teach children the negativity in terms of human dignity and emotional cost to being a victim of discrimination. This was done by splitting the children into two groups; brown eyes and blue eyes. The teacher would then make one group superior than the other, and the next reverse the order. This caused both groups to feel dominant and inferior.
3.      What were the results?

The results were really extraordinary. In a matter of minutes children that were friends started to fight. The reason being the difference of eye color even though that previously it didn’t matter what the color was. The dominant group would perform educationally better than the inferior. It showed that feeling inferior would automatically cripple one’s capabilities.
4.      How successful do you believe it was?

I believe it was fairly successful. The children felt the negativity and true horrors of discrimination and that they did not want to experience nor let others experience it. Prior to the test they felt colored people were stupid and inferior, after they say they are no differences between colored and white people.
Going Deeper
In groups of four, discuss the following:
Ø  a time she or he experienced prejudice or discrimination
When I was in the USA airport in New York, the fact that I had an Arab passport, I was interrogated and search for 3 hours in the airport and in multiple checks that were honestly unnecessary.

Ø  a time she or he discriminated against somebody else
When I was a young kid, I started to discriminate against the foreign school kids because I felt I was superior and that I was my country.

Ø  a time she or he witnessed discrimination and did nothing about it
When I was in a petrol station and saw a Filipino cross dresser being verbally abused and harassed, and I simply left the station because I felt he should have known better than to dress like that.
Ø  a time she or he witnessed discrimination and did something about it

When my friend was angry with an Indian waiter and started to shout at him, I felt he did that because he was Indian. Had it been an Emirati waiter it would not have been the case. I told him that if you have an issue discuss it with the waiter and if you can’t hold your temper then leave.

Reflection #1:  Emirati Culture Video

This is the first reflection of the course cultural diversity and it is about the video on Emirati culture. Firstly I would like to add that the video has been a challenge. Reason being is that the project was the first time the group and I worked on video. However, the challenges I feel have been met to the content of the project’s satisfaction. I feel we all spoke well on the points and that the video’s content is more than sufficient for the viewer.

The interesting part of the project was interacting with non Arab tourists. It was interesting to learn about other people’s culture, and as well as what they thought of the Emirati culture. The most interesting point of the project in my opinion was discussing how to keep the Emirati culture’s Integrity. How to preserve it in an increasing globalized country.

Exercise # 4 Everest Summit

Everest climbing team: Cultural Diversity
Watch the film and take notes to answer the following questions:
1.    List the team members by name, with their duties and country
Name                         Responsibility                     Country                     Skills
-           Ed Viesturs               Leader                                    USA Seattle              Leadership
-           Jamling Norgay                                                        Nepal
-           Roger Bilham           Scientist                                 UK, England             Geology
-           Paula Viesturs          Base camp manager           USA                            Organizer
-           Sumiyo Tsuzuki                                                       Japan
-           Araceli Segarra        Mountaineer                         Spain, Barcelona     Expert
-

2.    What were the qualities or skills of each member that benefitted the team?

-       Judging from the above table, it is pretty clear that their team is solid. They had the scientist, the professional climbers, and a man that climbed the mountain many times before. Hence such a team was ideal for its objective of climbing the summit.

3.    How was the Team helped by ‘cultural diversity’ to attain their goal (reach the summit of Everest)?

-       It is known that when in a group of different cultures, people tend to be more proactive in their work. They showed a lot of mutual respect to one another since the beginning to the end. They displayed perfect mutual cooperation.
